What Is Base64 Encoding?

Base64 is a way of turning any data (text, images, PDF files or any other file) into plain, safe text made of just 64 characters: Aโ€“Z, aโ€“z, 0โ€“9, plus (+) and slash (/). This lets binary data travel safely through systems that only handle text, such as emails, JSON, HTML, CSS and URLs. Our free Base64 Encoder converts your text or file instantly, right inside your browser.

How to Use

  1. Choose Text mode to type or paste text, or File / Image mode to upload a file.
  2. The Base64 result appears instantly. No button is needed.
  3. Use the options if you need URL-safe output, 76-character lines, or a Data URI prefix.
  4. Tap Copy or Download .txt to save your result.

Example

Input  : Hello World
Output : SGVsbG8gV29ybGQ=

Options Explained

OptionWhat it does
URL-safeReplaces + with – and / with _ and removes the = padding, so the result can be used safely in links and filenames
Split lines (76 chars)Breaks the output into 76-character lines (MIME format used in emails)
Add Data URI prefixAdds data:type;base64, in front, so you can embed an image directly in HTML or CSS

Where Is Base64 Used?

  • Embedding small images in HTML and CSS
  • Sending attachments in emails (MIME)
  • Passing data inside JSON and APIs
  • Basic authentication headers
  • JWT (login) tokens
  • Storing binary data in text databases

Important Note

Base64 is NOT encryption. Anyone can decode it. Never use it to hide passwords or secret data. It only changes the format of the data, and the encoded result is about 33% larger than the original.

FAQ

Is my data uploaded to a server?

No. All encoding happens inside your browser. Your text and files never leave your device.

Why is the Base64 output longer than the input?

Base64 uses 4 characters to represent every 3 bytes, so the result is about 33% larger.

What does the = at the end mean?

It is padding used to make the length a multiple of 4. The URL-safe option removes it.

Can I encode an image?

Yes. Switch to File / Image mode, upload your image, and tick Add Data URI prefix to use it directly in HTML or CSS.

How do I decode Base64 back to text?

Use our Base64 Decoder tool to convert it back to the original text.

Is there a file size limit?

This tool accepts files up to 10 MB so that your browser stays fast.
